Baltic Sea water amended with 0.3µmoll−1 PO 4 every week Nodularia spumigena from the Baltic Sea, the coastal waters of southern Australia and Lake Iznik in Turkey. In addition to known structures, 9 new congeners of spumigins, 4 aeruginosins and 12 anabaenopeptins (nodulapeptins) were identified. The production of aeruginosins by N. spumigena was revealed in Nodularia spumigena potentially toxic species, forming heavy blooms and producing nodularin; occurrence - summer; filaments 8-12 µm wide, cells 3-4 times shorter than wide. Photographer/artist Janina Kownacka Blooms of the cyanobacterium Nodularia spumigena occur regularly in the Baltic Sea typically producing a wide range of bioactive peptides including the hepatotoxin nodularin (NOD), spumigins, anabaenopeptins and nodulopeptins (molecular weights: 917, 901 and 899 Da). This study reports the production of intracellular and extracellular NOD and nodulopeptin 901 (the major secondary 2018-09-01 · In this study, a novel cyanophage infecting toxic Nodularia spumigena strain KAC68 was isolated and characterized (Fig.
Nodularins are potent toxins produced by the cyanobacterium Nodularia spumigena. This aquatic, photosynthetic cyanobacterium forms visible colonies that present as algal blooms in brackish water bodies throughout the world. The late summer blooms of Nodularia spumigena are among the largest cyanobacterial mass occurrences in the world. Cyanobacteria are composed of many toxic substances, most notably of microcystins and nodularins: the two are not easily differentiated.

In this study, changes in concentration of NOD and other NRPs during cyanophage infection of the filamentous cyanobacteria Nodularia spumigena were assessed using incubation experiments. Viral infection and lysis were associated with a significant reduction (93% at the 96 h post infection) of N. spumigena cell density. Two hepatotoxic Nodularia spumigena strains were isolated from the samples.

Nodularia is a blue-green alga (also known as cyanobacteria). It produces chains of cells to form mostly straight filaments. Some cells are modified to have various functions, such as nitrogen-fixing cells (heterocysts). It also produces thick-walled resting stages called akinetes (spores). Nodularia spumigena have aerotopes (groups of gas vesicles); they are one of four planktonic species that do. Species in this group may form dense blooms in the ocean or river estuaries, brackish coastal lakes and lagoons, and high-salinity inland lakes and reservoirs. Nodularia spumigena blooms occur in estuaries (HUBER, 1986) and in farm dams (MAIN et al., 1977; APLIN, 1983) with most significant occurrences of toxicity in Australia and in the Baltic region (LUNDBERG et al., 1983).
